  • Dr. Kent Obermann, circa 1982

Once upon a time, before there was a ToothZone Network, there was a young man from a small town in Iowa named Kent Obermann. This young man chose dentistry as his future career and it is safe to say that his vision for the future met or exceeded the size of his eyewear!

  • Dr. Kent Obermann, family dentist

This same Kent Obermann, shown here in the flowing robes of a graduate from the University of Tennessee dental school, became Dr. W. Kent Obermann in 1982 (shown in this photo with his brother Greg and sister, Kim.) That same year Kent moved his family to a town bursting with possibilities, Fort Collins, Colorado.

  • Drake Road, Fort Collins, Colorado

Upon arriving in Fort Collins, Dr. Kent purchased a pediatric dental practice from a retiring dentist and moved into a brand new location on Drake Road! Today, this location is affectionately known as the 'Drake Office' and remains a thriving part of the ToothZone Network.

So....the dream was coming true and the pediatric dental practice of Dr. W. Kent Obermann was born at 383 West Drake Road! The office was state of the art and designed to ensure that kids felt right at home. Arcade games in a dental office and a kid friendly environment were pretty 'outside the box' concepts in 1982...a way of thinking that continues to this day in the ToothZone Network!

  • The ToothZone has always had a fun game room for kids! Including an arcade!

  • Dr. Kent Obermann, dental education

Always a proponent of dental education, here Dr. Kent in 1983 (sporting a fine mane of hair we might add) is showing his daughter Mehgan the fine art of tooth brushing...an art she carries with her to this very day!

  • The ToothZone gives back to the community

From the very beginning ToothZone has been committed to giving back to the community. Here Dr. Kent teamed up with other local dentists for the 1985 Partners Superstar Challenge. (They reigned as champions 3 years in a row!)

  • In an effort to prove that Dr. Kent’s attempts at dental education were effective, here is Kent’s daughter Mehgan applying the 'art of tooth brushing' to none other than Miss Piggy!

  • Always a fan of a good party, Dr. Kent threw an annual 'Fun in the Sun Picnic', a family fun event at City Park, filled with kid's games, food and tons of FUN!

  • From the beginning, Dr. Kent has always made sure to show his appreciation for his wonderful staff. In 1988, he started a tradition of taking the whole staff and their spouses on an all-expenses paid trip to Mexico! An obvious favorite tradition of the staff!

  • Yet another community event put on by Dr. Kent was the annual Alternative Halloween Party; a safe place for children to play games, win candy and to enjoy Halloween. Here are Kent’s children, Mehgan and Jordan, with Charity the Chipmunk (more on Charity later!).

  • Dr. Kent has always gone above and beyond to care for and provide positive memories for his patients with special needs. During the Colorado Run, Dr. Kent organized the Wheelchair Assisted 5k Run in which runners and wheelchair assisted children would run together.

  • Christmas has always been a special time for Dr. Kent and his staff. For several years, the staff and family had the opportunity to visit and bring Christmas gifts to the children at the Namaqua Center foster home. These were life changing moments!

  • Under the category of 'never under-estimate the effectiveness of a good costume', here Dr. Kent's early mascot, Charity Chipmunk and a one of Dr. Kent's dental assistants educating kids on the importance of good dental hygiene!

  • Remodeled Drake Road office

So the 'dream' took root and the practice grew....and so did the building! The office on Drake Road expanded with additional treatment rooms and a new doctor added to the team!

  • Respite Care

Anyone at ToothZone, and especially Dr. Kent will tell you that the kids we serve end up changing our lives and, perhaps none more than Abby French. Abby was only supposed to live through her second birthday. That was not to be. When Abby finally went back to heaven at age 10, she left an incredible impact on thousands of people. She also helped Dr. Kent find a very special organization, Respite Care, an amazing group of people who provide a safe, fun and welcoming place to children with special needs, thus providing a 'respite' for the parents. Dr. Kent and ToothZone have been proud supporters and partners with Respite Care for years!

  • So the practice continued to grow and everyone got older! Here the staff makes sure Dr. Kent doesn't forget his 'over the hill 40th birthday!'

  • ToothZone, here we come!

The dream that began in 1982 hit a new stride in 2002 with the opening of the location at 1220 Oak Park Drive! Sporting Iowa Hawkeye black and gold colors and state of the art everything, this is when the name ToothZone was first launched.
