Directions to Our Practice
If you haven’t been out to our practice before, here are two routes you could take from Berthoud:
- Take Mountain Ave west out of town, then get onto US-287 heading south. Continue for seven miles, then turn right onto CO-66. Turn left onto Francis St, then right onto Mountain View Ave. We’re right on the corner of Mountain View Ave and Linden St.
- You could go east out of town instead. Get onto Larimer Country Rd 13 heading south. Continue all the way down to the reservoir, then turn right onto 17th Ave. Continue all the way to Francis St, then turn left. Turn right onto Mountain View Ave and find us at 1818 Mountain View Ave.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
The area now known as Berthoud saw its first settlers arrive in the early 1860s, drawn by the allure of the Colorado Gold Rush. Many early settlers filed homestead claims but soon found the arid, challenging conditions too daunting, leaving the land to more resilient ranchers and farmers.
The turning point for the area came in 1872 when Lewis Cross, a former miner turned rancher, claimed land strategically positioned along the forthcoming route of the Colorado Central Railroad at Little Thompson Creek. By 1877, when the railroad tracks were laid, this site — initially called Little Thompson — featured a depot and other essential facilities, and was renamed Berthoud in honor of Edward L. Berthoud, who surveyed the rail route.
The relocation of Berthoud in the winter of 1883-84 to its current location atop a nearby bluff marked a significant transformation. This move was prompted by the difficulty steam locomotives faced when ascending from the river valley. As agriculture flourished, the community grew, supported by a burgeoning network of reservoirs and irrigation ditches that enabled successful cultivation of crops like alfalfa, sugar beets, and wheat.
The town expanded rapidly, establishing a vibrant business district and integrating into the larger regional economy. Notably, in the 1920s, Mountain Avenue became part of the U.S. Highway 287, although this route was later altered in 2007 to bypass the town center. This rich historical backdrop sets the stage for Berthoud’s contemporary character as a resilient and thriving community.
